Creating a Better Future
Everything that happened in the past dictates the present. Everything that happens in the present dictates the future. Therefore, we can dictate a better future by being more present in the present.
I use the phrase “everything that happens” rather than “everything we do” because certain things in life are beyond our control. For instance, even before we are born much of our physical and mental traits are already determined by the genetics of our parents.
…being mindful of our present thoughts and actions allows us to consciously exercise free will rather than act on force of habit, lessening the replay of past mistakes and increasing the likelihood of future success.
Further, our surroundings and life circumstances play huge roles in determining what we are today. Our present circumstances are the consequences of both things that are within our control and those beyond.
So, if we look at our past troubles and failures, it’s not fair to lay the blame entirely on ourselves. That’s not to say that we should always look for other people and things to blame– we’d never learn that way.
It’s important to have a clear and accurate idea on how we have contributed to our problems and failures through our own unhealthy thoughts and actions.
By avoiding these unhealthy thoughts and actions we can avoid repeating these same mistakes like a broken record and increase the probability of a better outcome next time.
Of course, things may turn out bad anyway because of the things that are beyond our control and of the other mistakes we will make along the way (after all, to err is human).
However, being mindful of our present thoughts and actions allows us to consciously exercise free will rather than act on force of habit, lessening the replay of past mistakes and increasing the likelihood of future success.
Everything that happened in the past dictates the present. Everything that happens in the present dictates the future. Therefore, we can dictate a better future by being more present in the present.
